Swallow tail butterfly with great black dots
flitting on pink phlox in mild mellow air—
its yellow shimmer recalling the sun
of full golden-breath summer abundance.
I ponder about approaching autumn
as I note a parsley leaf turned yellow
and a plump wooly bear caterpillar
crossing where I was about to two-step
in secret dance of ecstatic wonder
while my son searches for his baseball bat
to hit home runs into green foliage
while bees, asps, and hornets frantically search
about our ears for last dregs of pollen
as days diminish in fruit and sunlight.
