The Word

In the beginning was the word,

but when was the sentence?

The world may be 50 million years old

as even baboons have the word,

yet when was grammar invented?

When did someone say “I’m going now,”

or “what’s this stuff we’re eating?”

The word is a tricky thing—

when someone says tomorrow,

they might mean never.

When can a world be trusted?

Is the world love trusted?

While joys and pitfalls of the word

can never be predicted—

unlike the waxing moon—

the word, perhaps a sudden shout,

is something we all cherish,

even if we only say “Hello”

or utter forlorn “Goodbye.”
