Questions for the Pacific

Do dreams like rivulets

of love return to you,

having altered little or nothing

     but themselves? are we

just a nuisance

or an awful knot

that won’t be cut until all (or what we think

is all) is lost? shall our

world stay,

although we die quickly,

returning immediately, having thought

     of one last thing

that might make

a difference? no reply:

are waves circumspect perhaps

     or shy or fearful

of the human scent

in speech, or simply

declining conversation? if waves could speak,

     they might tell us everything:

I stood listening

at the edge of the sea,

remembering past incidents,

     recalling childhood lost in water.
