I fell in love

I fell in love

with my shadow

when I first noticed it

just before my second birthday

when I thought the scent of flowers

was an overwhelming intoxicant

I could never cope with

and an orange sunset

amid striated yellow and purple clouds

was the most dazzling

wonder that could be experienced

as I struggled to pronounce my first words

in a world of enigmatic shapes and sounds

where I would stumble about

knowing it was all a fleeting, shadowy gift,

and that my shadow was of no consequence,

but that the secret of life

was inquiry, digestion, and a small dose

of laughter mixed with bitter tears

amid words, dreams, and memories.
