That Feast

Orange-red oak leaf spiraling to earth

through gray-blue air in silent slow motion

signals the firm arrival of autumn,

a time to offer fervent thanksgiving

for the abundance of fruitful harvest.

Let that emotion be like a pebble

cast into a stilly mirror-like pond

whose ripples exfoliate in friendship,

greater sense of communal endeavor.

That potato or pumpkin you consume

becomes symbol of solidarity

and felicity in community

that aspires to put the word giving

into the daily bread of the living.
