With the day as his model, Harry Orlyk has spent 35 years documenting farmland in Washington County. His colorful paintings hang on the walls of the Ober Gallery in Kent Connecticut.

Orlyk was born in Troy, New York. In 1970 he graduated with a B.S. from SUNY New Paltz and in 1974 received an M.F.A from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. In 1974 he also received the Woods Fellowship and in 1995 the Guggenheim Fellowship award.

Orlyk is well known just a jaunt away from here in Hudson, New York where he has been featured for the last decade at the Carrie Haddad gallery.

I interviewed Susan and Gennaro in their home here in Millbrook. When I first made the appointment with Susan, she told me she was not sure what time Gennaro would arrive. He was definitely coming up from Manhattan but she was unsure if he was coming by car or by bicycle! When I did finally get to meet him, he was dressed as if he was doing the Tour de France…but we were able to have a nice leisurely chat. You have been together for over 30 years and just celebrated your 25th wedding anniversary. How did you two meet? We met in the medeival style Village of Alto De Chavon in the Dominican Republic. It is a cultural center, artist colony- tourist attraction. Gennaro was a chef at one of the restaurants and I was tending textile weaving workshops. When we first met we spoke Spanish to one another – we dated in Spanish.
The N.Y. State track meet signals the end of the season for all track and field teams. Only a select few members of the 4,000 plus schools across the state get to go.  For Millbrook it was for six very talented young ladies- Mallory Peterson, Mary-Kate Bida, Emily Koehler, Albina Camaj, and Daron McShane. On Friday, under warm, moist, sunny skies, Mallory `ran the good race', coming within 3 seconds of her season best in the 800 meter with a time of 2:23.  This placed her 30th overall in the entire state, and 13th in Division II (small school divsion).

Six girls from the Millbrook High track team qualified for the chance to compete in the New York State Championships in Syracuse.

This year’s track team is smaller than in previous years, but is an improvement.  Last year, no one on the team made States.  This year, Mallory Peterson will be competing as an individual and as a member of the 4x800 relay team.  The relay team consists of Peterson, Mary-Kate Bida, Emily Koehler and Kyla Karten.

Nicole DiPilato was getting her children ready for school around 8 a.m. Thursday, May 31 when she heard what sounded like a thunderclap and then the lights went out.  They live off Route 82 in Verbank at the turn just south of the firehouse.   The sound came from the road.  They looked out and saw a tanker truck upended at the foot of their lawn.  Nicole called 911 while her husband ran down to see what he could do.  Nicole said the emergency people arrived within minutes and she was told to get her children out because of the possibility of an explosion.
